The Work of the Shadow

Behind the scenes:

This component forms part of a series of six artist books, in which I apply the practice of illustration as a tool to attain a deeper understanding of self. The self-created brief asks for the practical execution of research including Jungian Psychology, Transpersonal psychology, theory of self, theory of the nature of the real world, sense-consciousness theory and exploration of the depth dimension/spiritual world.

>Myopia:

Getting so close that was able to see the critters crawling in the creeper. So close I could see the details in the parts of myself which are alien, strange and obscure. Quite frankly, dark. It has been the most challenging part of my process. And yet, at that moment, I just exhale. I accept the light touching my face, knowing I also cast a shadow.

The creeper will grow again, and the gardener will learn through each experience.

The results of shadow work cannot be taught; they must be earned.

The Art of Dying

>Myopia:

We can see things which are there and not there, as we can – by utilising spiritual consciousness – see the images presented by the real world as well as their analogue existence in the spiritual world.

Scarlotte Will

Behind the scenes:

This brief required the illustration of a local rock band; Scarlotte Will. Along with this instruction I was given a song to interpret after which I was to combine what I personally took from the song’s lyrics and overall feeling with the representation of the band members.

>Myopia:

Nothing stays…not the same, not with you, not even alive. There is great treasure to be found in this impermanence, the greatest being the peace that comes from accepting it. Winter has its own beauty.

Goodbye Spirit Bird

Behind the scenes:

This brief asked me to represent the recent passing on of a dear friend of the client. The theme we chose for?the brief was ‘Goodbye Spirit Bird,’ as a farewell to Tony. Tony was a creative soul, who loved working with children and giving his time and love to charity.

>Myopia:
Tony; we salute your spirit, and we honour your ascension. Goodbye, Spirit Bird. Fly far and stay near.

Splintering Midgard

Behind the scenes:

This brief only stated the theme or title of the exhibition I created this image for: “The Third Dimension”.

Myopia:

In Norse mythology, Midgard literally means “the middle enclosure.” It is the world of human civilization, the realm of fields and fences. To splinter it would mean to break free of the limitations (fences) of Midgard, wether that describe traveling to dimensions other than the known physical, or psychologically setting yourself free of what the third has limited you with.

Everything Is As It Should Be

Behind the scenes:

For this project of self promotional purposes, the brief required a visual depiction of who the artist believes she is and what she would like to say to the world. This would be illustrated, incorporating illustrated type, and applied to various mass producible products, 4 x postcards, 1x poster and business cards. I decided to illustrates life hacks that I have conjured up live by, almost like mantras which allow me to be what I am- which is perfectly human.
